Peter Frank is on my Resume!

Good News first, right? I got a review! It was written by Peter Frank in Artillery Magazine that just came out! And it wasn’t just a good review, it was a great review. I am so happy!

Do you know what he said about the movie, Up to Now? He said, “The 8-minute video, a lesson in overcoming obstacles by not taking yourself too seriously, should be played to college art classes all over the world.”

In college art classes all over the world, he said. Jesus! Peter Frank said that. Is that not the coolest thing ever, or what?

And did I ever need cheering up these last couple of weeks. I’ve been having a really hard time with depression and I know I really shouldn’t allow an external validation be the thing that picks me up, but shit, it sure doesn’t hurt. I’ve been getting rejected from stuff all over the place lately and it’s not just that, it’s other stuff too that I mentioned before that I couldn’t exactly talk about or announce yet, nor do I want to.

In the mean time, I am still working on that piece for the Jerusalem Biennial – which hasn’t been titled yet. Let me know if you have any good ideas. …And I’ve all but abandoned the watercolor, which I’m not sure why. I think my mind has been wrapped up in the construction/collage piece only. Plus my confidence has been a crazy roller-coaster in regards to how it’s coming along. I like it, I hate it, I like it, I hate it – you know, the way all paintings go.

Where we did we leave off? I don’t remember exactly. And have I even explained what it is I’m doing?

I had people collect paper ephemera and other junk from Jerusalem and bring it back to me, as the theme of the show there is 7,567 Mi–> (the exact mileage between Los Angeles and Jerusalem). The grocery bags are from Los Angeles and I used three of them. Now I’m in the process of hand stitching them together, so there will be black stitching along the seams where they are connected.

The above is basically how this thing looks finished. I just have to stitch it up.

The hand stitching may take a while. I only just started, but it will give the piece a nice detail. I’ll let a lot of the threads fall and tatter a bit.

The poem is by Yehuda Amichai, a well know poet in Israel and it’s a fitting poem about tourism.

Well, that’s it for now.

The website is almost done. I hope to finish it up this weekend actually. Fingers crossed. I’ve been spending more time doing that than anything else really. Maybe I should have mentioned that. My mind has been buried in php code, but the new site is a lot simpler and made for all you mobile-folks.

Carol. Well done you!! It doesn’t surprise me as I know just how brilliant you are. I’m very sorry that you’re suffering right now. I’m in the doldrums too, but I WILL send a ‘Care package’ out to you as soon as I stop swerving about all over the place.
Loving your new stitched collage. It’s just my ‘thing’!

    Thank you Steve, and Kate.

I’m sorry you’re also in the doldrums Kate. I’ve been meaning to write to you to find out what’s been going on with you.

Thanks for the compliments on my new work!
