Moppet
mop·pet [mop'-it]
n. A young child.
[From obsolete mop, fool, child, from Middle English moppe.]
Origin:
1900–05; obs. mop rag doll, baby (see mop 1 ) + -et
1601, "endearing term for a baby, a girl, etc.," from M.E. moppe "little child, baby doll" (c.1440) + -et, dim. suffix. The M.E. word also meant "simpleton, fool," and may have been cognate with Low Ger. mop "simpleton." Or, if "baby doll" is the original sense in M.E., perhaps from L. mappa "napkin, tablecloth," hence "rag doll."
Classification/Locale:
Moppet is also the name of my new studio space in Highland Park, which is located in the northeast region of Los Angeles city. This area consists of a thriving, diverse arts community of galleries, arts organizations and working artists. My studio is one of many in the area and I am happy to be included in its long tradition of visable devotion of making northeast LA such a special and unique neighborhood. If you would like to make a studio visit, please make an appointment first, or just come to a Second Saturday event (when I'm participating) where you can see me amongst an abundance of incredible artists on a self-guided tour via NELAArt.
