ART

Modern mix-masters Josh Dorman, Carol Es, and Julie Speed are art historians of sorts, as all three borrow imagery from recycled sources such as obsolete textbooks, vintage clothing, and discarded signs in order to create multi-layered surfaces where past meets present. Dorman's technique involves drawing and painting on antique ledger pages, with the ghost-like lines of the original text peeking out from underneath, while Speed weaves complex story lines using collages of disparate found objects. Es' work is highly personal - she excavates childhood memories through craft learned from her days as a cutter in the garment industry and literally reconstructs them with thread and embroidery on canvas.
