Medicine Dan, 2024--a story about a special animal who heals. This 60-page Artist's book focuses exclusively on Dan, a cartoon character invented by Ayin Es. This book is made with Moab Legion Lasal Photo Matte 235gsm and Kayenta 205gsm paper using digital color printing and reproductions throughout. It includes various original sketches in colored pencils, as well as watercolor and ink illustrations.
Each of the five signatures are wrapped in beautiful imported papers. These are: Thai Marbled Mulberry, Thai Mango, Thai Unryu, Lokta Bloom, and Aitoh Japanese paper, and some featuring custom rubber stamping. There are also two hand-stitched felt pages as well as an imported Khadi Indian paper pocket holding colorful stickers of Dan.
These books are handbound with a buttonhole binding using waxed linen threads imported from Ireland. The covers feature a hand-cut silhouette of Dan, and are hand-embroidered with the title through 300gsm Gmund-color cardstock. Only eight books were created in this edition, signed and numbered by Ayin Es in 2024, and each come contained with a special strap in a custom transparent Plexiglass box, garnished with a wild turkey feather.
Medicine Dan was recently purchased by Baylor University Libraries, Artist Book Collection and RISD's Fleet Library's Special Collections.
